Slightly Anxious!

Well, I had intended to post a new entry on this blog every week or so but life has been BUSY BUSY,  in a good way though :) 

I have continued to meet amazing people along the way and am continually inspired by the generosity of others.

I met with the Community Relationships Manager from CanTeen and loved her enthusiasm for our project and the support she was able to offer to make some of the harder things a little easier was awesome.  We then travelled to KeriKeri and met with Deb and Tracey who are the best sounding boards and supporters any one could hope for.  We had a wonderful morning with lots of giggles and planning.

When I began this journey I thought it was going to be hard to get people to donate items for auction or to sponsor us.  Deb assured me it wouldn’t be and she was right!  I have had so much success because of the willingness of others to help.  I have cold called lots of businesses and there have been plenty keen to help and not many have said no.   You will find all businesses who have supported us on our facebook page and I hope you will support them as they have supported us.  If you know of any businesses or individuals that would like to be involved please get them to contact me  Email

Angels for CanTeen 

And now on to the head shave!  I have felt my first wee bit of trepidation about the shave in the last week or so,  it was bought on when I saw a photo of a stunning lady with her head shaved and I thought to myself “Bet I won’t look like that” .  It has continued to niggle at me,  even producing a few odd hairless dreams!  I am sure it will pass and I am 100% committed to organising this event with Deb and our support crew, shaving my head and rocking it!

I will try and keep the blog posts more regular now but things can get away on you sometimes!

He tangata - It is people

Well,  the last few weeks have been a bit up and down but all have included spending time with some amazing individuals.

First I shared some lovely time with a dear elderly friend Eadie who has twice beaten cancer,  she was a fighter and she was the most incredible 90 year old I have ever known.  She was accepting of every one,  the life of the party and the kindest, sweetest lady.  She really was one out of the box,  unfortunately the last battle was one she could not win and she passed on 23 March 2013.  You were a special lady loved by so many Eadie, hope the party is good where ever you are <3

We had a nice relaxing Easter and some lovely family time.  The Tuesday after Easter,  Brock and I were lucky enough to get our pre-Shave portraits taken.  It was with many nerves that we arrived at the home of Tracey,  we really needn’t have worried as we both immediately felt at ease and soon forgot that Tracey was pointing a huge camera at us!  Tracey is an incredible artist and we are so so thrilled that she was keen to be involved in Angels for CanTeen.  Please take the time to look at her work on her facebook page  Tracey Stevens Photography

On our way home from getting our portraits we stopped in on Deb, the lady behind The Angel Project - NZ and co-organiser of Angels for CanTeen with me.  It was wonderful to catch up with her,  meet her lovely hubby and gorgeous children and just spend time throwing about ideas.  Many great plans are made over coffee! 

This last week was made all the more special by the amazing Mike from Classic Hits Northland agreeing to have a male brazilian live on radio if we could raise $1000 by 9am Thursday, $1220 later Mike was in a very uncomfortable position live on air and getting his bits stripped by hot wax!!  Mike you are an absolute legend and we thank you for your unwavering (well maybe slightly wavering halfway through the wax job) support!

And this is why I am loving being involved in this project,  you meet incredible people, get warm fuzzys on a daily basis and help out others in the process.

Diary of a Shavee - part 2

Hi every one

Thanks so much for your great response to my first post.

As soon as I told my 8 year old son I was going to shave my head for CanTeen  he asked if he could shave his too.  I asked him to very sure as it was a big commitment and gave him a few days to think about it.

Here are some of the words he used when I asked him to tell me why he wants to shave his head for CanTeen;

“To support you in shaving your head and to raise more money for CanTeen.  To support the good work they (CanTeen) are doing”

“I would like to be a part of that as well”

To  call me proud would be an understatement!!!

CanTeen has 6 values they live by, below is one in particular I would love Angels for CanTeen to live by;

We are ONE TEAM by:

• Recognising the power of the group
• Supporting each other and playing a part
• Recognising and celebrating
• Having fun together!

Diary of a Shavee - the beginning

So,  I thought it might be a little interesting to let you in to my head while I partake in this journey I have signed myself up for.

Let’s start at the beginning....

Why am I shaving my head?  

 In 2012 I became involved in The Angel Project-NZ which was started by the lovely Deb Shepherd.  Deb and I grew up in the same area and attended the same schools although a few years apart.  In early 2012 my beautiful friend and Deb’s cousin married the man of her dreams and Deb and I connected over the wedding photos on Facebook.  I noticed that Deb was fundraising tirelessly for a wee boy that needed to be in America to get treatment for a very rare condition.   When I looked further I saw that she had fundraised for many different causes over the years.  I was inspired!  I donated a couple of vouchers for cakes or cupcakes to be auctioned on Trade Me in 2012,  when 2013 rolled around I was trying to think of something more I could do, I wanted to raise more money.

A light bulb went on...... How about I shave my head for CanTeen!  Surely most of my friends and family would support me and sponsor me?  I contacted Deb and we talked through ideas, we invited a few other people in on our discussion and they were all supportive too.  And so Angels for CanTeen was born.

Already I have made great connections with new people, it feels great to be working on this project and I can see my enthusiasm reflected back to me by the people  I talk to about it.

I was growing my hair in 2013 but I am now very proud to say  I will shave my head for CanTeen in September 2013 and I hope you will join our journey.
